A great achievement for Glusburn Community Primary School
Each year, eight of our lower Key Stage 2 children take part in the Maths Challenge at South Craven alongside other schools from our local area. The children work together as a team to complete three rounds of challenges, including some very tricky problem solving to gain points.
Glusburn has been the winning team, three years in a row!
Article 29: Every child has the right to achieve their potential.
Global Goal #4 A quality education
We are part of the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub
As part of the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub, our school attend a TRG (Teacher Research Group) which is a regional initiative supporting mathematics education across North Yorkshire, York, and the East Riding. It aims to improve teaching and learning through projects, professional development (CPD) for teachers, and spreading "teaching for mastery" approaches to build deep understanding for all pupils, coordinated nationally by the NCETM.
The overall focus for 2025-2026 lies in the Teaching for Mastery approach which we adopt and embed in our teaching as a whole school.
- Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.
- The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.
- Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.
